It is a tree between 15 and 20 meters high, with a gray scaly bark and evergreen foliage all year round. The Incas, then later the Spaniards, used its trunk in their constructions. Its leaves are used by the Andean communities as a natural dye for fabrics and as food for cattle. In the Andes, this tree is widely used for its healing qualities, such as for sore throats or infections.
